Storage media are the physical devices and materials on which electronic data is recorded and kept so it can be retrieved later, such as optical discs, magnetic media, and other storage devices. Different types of media hold information in different ways and vary in how long they reliably last. In records management, the choice of storage media matters because it affects whether records remain accessible and usable over the periods they must be retained.
Storage media refers to the physical devices or materials that receive, retain, and make available electronic data for applications and users. Common categories include optical storage (for example, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs, which encode data as physical pits on a disc) as well as other magnetic, solid-state, and related device types used to store, manage, and protect organizational data. Storage media should be distinguished from the records or information stored on them: the medium is the carrier, while the record's evidential qualities (authenticity, reliability, integrity, and usability) depend on how content is captured, managed, and preserved over time.
